UCF arboretum plant guide

If you think UCF doesn’t have enough fresh greens, you haven’t been to the arboretum yet. Here’s a short guide to some of the organic plants that grow there and what they can do for you.

The Arboretum at UCF partners with Landscape & Natural Resources to bring a sustainable outdoor environment to the campus. The Arboretum includes a garden and a forest-like area that allows students to do research and plant trees and other plants. In the garden, which is protected by a deer fence, different kinds of foods can grow.

Students are encouraged to plant their own food based on what can grow in Florida. Knights Pantry, a food pantry at the university, recently started using the Arboretum as a resource to give students organic vegetables.

Even while still green, papayas are still edible in salads and stews.

One type of plant you can find in the UCF arboretum are papayas. They are filled with vitamins A, B and C, dietary minerals and dietary fiber. Even while still green, papayas are still edible in salads and stews. Medicine made from papayas helps remedy digestive problems and can be used as a contraceptive.

This is a guest post frrom the first UCF magazine, Centric. See the full guide here.
